Government gives a major thrust on enhancing participation of women in various S&T development activities. Major programmes in this direction are presented below:
Women Empowerment Programme
The DST supports a programme which has the broad based objective to empower women with inputs of S&T with a view to promote development and adaptation of appropriate technology, transfer of proven technologies and demonstration of live technology models to benefit women.
National Award for Women Development
The DST confers National Awards for women development through the application of Science and Technology.
Technology Development and Utilization Programme for Women (TDUPW)
The DSIR has initiated action to enhance the share of women in respect of beneficiary oriented schemes and launched the above programme. It is aimed to meet specific needs of women and to enhance their contribution towards technology capability building. The objectives of the programme are (a) promoting the adoption of new technologies by women (b) awareness creation and training of women in various technologies (c) technological up gradation of tiny, small and medium enterprises run by women entrepreneurs and (d) showcasing of appropriate technologies and organizing demonstration programmes for the benefit of women.
National Women Bioscientists award
The DBT has instituted this award to be conferred every year to encourage and recognize significant research contributions of women bioscientists. One of the awards – Senior Women Bioscientist Award is given to a senior woman scientist for life time contributions, excellent research and application for the benefit of the society. The other award – Young Women Bioscientist Award is given to a young woman scientist below the age of 45 years for pursuing a brilliant research career in biology.
